The 8 Dimensions of Wellness!

Updated: May 3, 2018

Welcome! The purpose of this blog is to promote wellness and to also take a look at each of the dimensions of wellness. I'm hoping that you'll be able to take something of value away from this blog and either start, or continue on your journey to optimal wellness!

Lets first start off with the definition of wellness so we can gain a better understanding of each of the dimensions. Wellness is defined as "...an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life."

-University of California, Davis : What is Wellness?

Now lets take a quick look at each of the dimensions and identify the importance of each role in achieving optimal wellness.

The 8 Dimensions of Wellness

1. Emotional Wellness: When a person is able to cope with stress or difficult situations, and acknowledge their feelings. This is important because if we don't have emotional wellness it can lead to depression and other mental illnesses.

2. Social Wellness: Being able to form friendships, relationships, and interact effectively in social environments. This is important because our daily lives usually require some sort of interactions with others, so it's helpful to have good social skills.

3. Physical Wellness: Living a healthy lifestyle; doing things like exercising, eating well, taking care of illnesses or injuries, and sleeping. This is important because we only have one body and it's very important that we treat it right so that we can live a long and healthy life!

4. Spiritual Wellness: Having a connection with something that's intangible. This is important because it can help us identify our purpose or maintain our personal values.

5. Occupational Wellness: Having a job or career that is fulfilling or engaging. This is important because it will make your work days more enjoyable and exciting.

6. Intellectual Wellness: Having the desire to keep on learning new things or being open to learning new concepts. This is important because it helps us exercise our brains and also stay current on new developments.

7. Financial Wellness: Being financially secure and knowing how to manage money. This is important because money can have a huge influence on our health. Whether it's being able to pay for medication, doctor visits, or even stressing over money which will have a negative impact on our emotional wellness.

8. Environmental Wellness: Caring about the environment and doing our part to ensure that we are sustaining our natural resources. This is important because we can help protect our planet and also improve things like our air and water quality.
